The count down now begins for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which takes place on 25th May 2018. This is the biggest change in data protection laws for 20 years and intends to give European citizen back control over their personal data. It wont be just over Europe as it will have wider implications for companies across the world that hold data on the continent.
For individuals, it will help complex problems for companies.
As well as the right to be forgotten, the law holds provisions that could potentially increase consumers rights over their data.
There is so much to consider about how it will apply in reality. The laws could mean that people could ask social networks such as facebook to delete their profiles entirely. Also Laws relating to freedom of expression will stop “the right to be forgotten” extending to news feeds.
The good news is that there is potential for individuals to transfer their data from one service to another a lot easier.
Could be fines for businesses that do not comply with the laws.
Once GDPR comes in, companies could see more legal challenges from individuals and groups that take up privacy issues on behalf of citizens.
There will be a lot more news in the coming months. Please look out for our blog on the GDPR.
