Millions of Brits jetting off on their summer break will face face a new ‘holiday tax‘
A controversial new tourist charge imposed on visitors to Balearic Islands – including Ibiza and Majorca – will apply to everyone from July 1 this year. The costs apply to each holidaymaker who is aged 14 or older.
The tax will range between two euros a day for customers staying in five star establishments to 50 cents for hostels and shelters, with discounts of 50% for stays in low season and longer than 20 days.
The tax is a daily levy of 2 euros about £1.55 – per person. In virtually all cases, holidaymakers will be asked to pay when they arrive at reception or at least pay up before they return home.
For a family of four on a holiday lasting a fortnight, this adds an extra £84 onto the holiday.
However, after nine nights the tax is halved. This means that a two week holiday is more likely to cost in the region of £70.
For those holidaying in peak times, the tax remains the same.
However between November and March the tax is halved, so it will add the lesser fee of roughly £35 for a typical family holiday.
